At the beginning of 1915, 3rd Division were holding a section of the line south of Ypres and when not in the line the 4th Royal Fusiliers battalion of 9 Brigade, were in billets in Locre (Loker).On 9th February 1915 they took over a new line of trenches near Kemmel for a five day tour. The battalion diary states that it was very wet but does not mention any casualties. Between 18th and 20th February, 1915, the battalion was in the Cavalry Barracks in Ypres and on 21st February they moved into the front line in a new set of trenches to the south of Ypres where they stayed, in very wet conditions for two days and nights. The battalion diary reports that there were many dead bodies lying around and that they buried dozens of them and that German fire resulted in a number of casualties on the first night. Charles Grodner. died from wounds on 22nd February after having been taken back to a base hospital on the coast.
